MY CARE DIABETES CLINIC
What is Diabetes?
- Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by high levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood
- This happens because the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t use insulin effectively.
- Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps glucose enter the cells to be used for energy.
What are Complications of Diabetes?
Diabetes, particularly if poorly managed, can lead to several serious complications that affect various organs and systems in the body. The complications can be categorized into acute and chronic:
Acute Complications
Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar):
- Can result from too much insulin, missed meals, or excessive physical activity.
- Symptoms include shakiness, sweating, confusion, dizziness, and in severe cases, seizures or unconsciousness.
Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar):
- Happens when blood sugar levels are too high due to insufficient insulin or poor management.
- Can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in type 1 diabetes or hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) in type 2 diabetes, both of which are medical emergencies.
Chronic Complications
These usually develop over time due to prolonged high blood sugar levels and affect multiple organ systems:
Cardiovascular Disease:
- Increased risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes.
- Hypertension and high cholesterol are also common in people with diabetes.
Neuropathy (Nerve Damage):
- Peripheral neuropathy: Causes tingling, pain, or loss of sensation in the feet, hands, or limbs.
- Autonomic neuropathy: Affects the autonomic nervous system, leading to problems with digestion, bladder control, sexual function, and heart rate.
Nephropathy (Kidney Damage):
- Chronic high blood sugar can damage the kidneys, leading to diabetic nephropathy, which can eventually cause kidney failure or the need for dialysis.
Retinopathy (Eye Damage):
- Damage to the small blood vessels in the retina can lead to diabetic retinopathy, which may cause vision loss or blindness if untreated.
- People with diabetes are also at higher risk for cataracts and glaucoma.
Diabetic Foot:
- Poor circulation and nerve damage increase the risk of foot ulcers and infections.
- In severe cases, this can lead to gangrene and the need for amputation.
Skin Complications:
- People with diabetes are more prone to skin infections, fungal infections, and diabetic dermopathy (brown patches on the skin).
Gum Disease:
- Diabetes can increase the risk of periodontitis (serious gum infection), which may lead to tooth loss if not managed properly.
Alzheimer’s Disease:
- Some studies suggest that type 2 diabetes can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s or dementia due to the effects on blood vessels and nerve cells.
Hearing Impairment:
- There is a higher risk of hearing loss among people with diabetes, possibly due to blood vessel and nerve damage in the inner ear
